Restaurant meal delivery service Deliveroo is adding a feature, the RooBox, to offer its member restaurants in Amsterdam extra kitchen capacity.

Deliveroo provides meals from restaurants which do not have their own delivery services and often need extra preparation areas, the Financieele Dagblad said on Friday.

Deliveroo differs from other takeaway services like Thuisbezorgd.nl in that its member restaurants tend to be smaller and more specialised. Adding kitchen capacity to serve the takeaway market can be an expensive proposition, hence the development of the RooBox concept.

Deliveroo will set up two RooBoxes – shipping containers converted into kitchens – in Amsterdam. ‘This enables restaurants to expand their capacity at a low cost’, said Philip Padberg, managing director of Deliveroo Nederland.

The RooBox was developed in London, Deliveroo’s home market, last April. Padberg will not disclose what restaurants have to pay for the added capacity but did say the biggest growth market for restaurants is takeaway services. Deliveroo works with about 1,000 restaurants in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem and Rotterdam.
