Treitervlogger is new Dutch word of the year

Treitervlogger – someone who makes video blogs featuring bullying behaviour – has won this year’s competition to find the best new Dutch word.

The annual contest is organised by the Van Dale dictionary group. This year over 100,000 people took part and treitervlogger picked up a third of the vote. Pokemonterreur was second with 23%, followed by Trumpism on 11%.

Treitervlogger hit the headlines this summer after a group of young men in Zaandam started harassing shoppers and putting the videos online. The vlogger at the centre of the row later apologised for what he called his ‘stupid behaviour’ after spending a few days in a police cell.

‘The great thing about new words is that they show the language is alive and dynamic,’ said Van Dale editor in chief Ton den Boon. ‘And the words reflect what is happening in society.’

Last year’s word of the year was sjoemelsoftware after the Volkswagen scandal.
