The Netherlands and Austria will go to court if Germany presses ahead with plans to bring in road tolls, infrastructure minister Melanie Schultz according to German broadcaster DW.

Belgium and Denmark may also join the initiative, Schultz said following a meeting of EU ministers on Thursday. Germany’s plans are alarming and that ‘these concerns can only be dispelled if the toll is not introduced,’ the minister is quoted as saying.

Later on Thursday, the European Commission said it had approved Germany’s plan to introduce a toll for its motorways and federal highways after revisions were made to take away potential discrimination against other EU members.

The original plan was effectively designed to only impact foreign drivers.
