An ambitious concept for door-to-door transport within an hour by 2040 has been launched by the transport ministry, provincial and local authorities and various transport bodies, news website  said on Thursday.

While no concrete plans yet exist, the group will investigate innovative solutions to meet travel demands of the future, says junior transport minister Sharon Dijksma.

The transport organisations is looking into a large network of metros, light rail and buses with direct connections to traffic centres in the cities. Waiting times could be shortened through more frequent services, the planners say. Other options include shared cars and self-driving buses as well as the availability of electronic bikes  at transport hubs.

The minister hopes to present several research results soon which will detail possible improvements to the current transport networks.
