Nearly 8,000 complaints reach Dutch firework hotline so far

Colorful fireworksAlmost 8,000 complaints have been made to the firework nuisance hotline in the 2.5 days it has been open.

Most of the complaints so far have been about people setting off firework ‘bombs’ followed by reports about ‘irritating supermarket fireworks’, news agency ANP said.

The hotline, now in its fifth year, was set up by 30 local branches on political party GroenLinks, including those of Rotterdam, The Hague and Groningen. Last year the hotline received 89,000 complaints during the firework season.

‘Every year, fireworks cause millions of euros worth of damage and hundreds of injuries,’ the website states. ‘An increasing number of people are fed up with the problems around the New Year celebrations.’
