Some 2,000 people gathered on Dam square in central Amsterdam on Wednesday evening to show their solidarity with the people of the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo.

‘We can stand around and watch but that is not what we should be doing,’ Joost Poppe, one of the people behind the demonstration, told broadcaster NOS. ‘People are showing their support all over Europe and Amsterdam must do so too.’

There was also a gathering on the Domplein in central Utrecht, NOS said.

Hopes have now risen that a planned evacuation of rebel-held parts of the Syrian city  will begin on Thursday, the BBC reported.
