The Wadden nature reserve is the most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands, broadcaster NOS  reports.

Some 88,000 people participated in an online survey to choose the best nature reserves from among 13 contenders. The Wadden Sea came out on top while De Veluwe National Park and National Park Hollandse Duinen came in second and third respectively.

The competition, an initiative from junior economic affairs minister Martijn van Dam, is meant to give Dutch nature reserves more international recognition. ‘We want to be proud of them and tell people about them. They are just as interesting a holiday destination as Amsterdam,’ Van Dam told NOS earlier.

The winners will get €300,000 each and there will be a national and international campaign to highlight these ‘icons of Dutch nature’, NOS said.
