VVD increases lead in latest poll of polls, 50Plus marches on
The ruling VVD is increasing its lead over the Geert Wilders’ PVV in the latest Peilingwijzer poll of polls but there are wide differences within the different component parts.
The new poll of polls says the right-wing Liberals would win between 26 and 30 seats in the 150 seat parliament if there were a general election tomorrow. That gives the VVD 17.3% to 20% of the vote.
The PVV would win 23 to 27 seats, with a maximum 18% of the vote. The Netherlands will hold a general election next March.
Support for the PVV in the poll of polls has been declining steadily for several months. However, compiler Tom Louwerse told broadcaster NOS that there are wide variations in the five polls which make up the total.
For example, the Politieke Barometer poll gives the VVD an eight seat advantage over the PVV, while EenVandaag’s De Stemming puts the PVV three seats ahead of the Liberals.
Also noteworthy, says Louwerse, is the continued rise of fringe party 50Plus, which is on target to win seven to 11 seats. The party won two at the 2012 general election. News that the state pension age is to rise by a further three months is likely to further boost the party’s fortunes, Louwerse said.
