Dutch public toilet hygiene caught short, just one in four is properly clean

Mens public toiletJust one in four public toilets in the Netherlands are properly clean and standards of hygiene have gone down since last year, according to random checks on 150 rest rooms by trade magazine Service Management.

Women’s toilets tend to be cleaner than men’s and toilets in cafes and hotels are much cleaner than those in stations, council offices and sports complexes, the survey found.

The researchers took samples from toilet seats, flush handles, taps and door handles. Of these points of contact, 42% of toilet seats were found to be unhygenic, followed by door handles.

The cleanest toilet in the survey was at a branch of Bagels and Beans in Wageningen, which scored 10 out 10 for hygiene.
