Dutchman Michael van Gerwen retains Grand Slam of Darts title
Dutchman Michael van Gerwen thrashed James Wade to retain the Grand Slam of Darts title on Sunday, his 24th tournament victory this year.
Van Gerwen, who is the world number one, booked an 16-8 victory over Wade at the final in Wolverhampton. The Grand Slam of Darts tournament involves the best players from the PDC and BDO professional darts associations.
‘I’m very happy with this win,’ Van Gerwen told Dutch media after the match. ‘It puts me in a positive frame of mind in the run up to the World Cup.’
Darts is a popular sport in the Netherlands and Dutch players are among the best in the world. The national darts association NDB was founded in 1976 and has some 33,000 members.
