The mayor of The Hague is stepping down at the beginning of March next year, even though his contract runs until the end of 2017.
Jozias van Aartsen says he wants to give his successor enough time to become familiar with the job before the March 2018 local elections. He said in 2013 that he was unlikely to complete his full term.
Van Aartsen has been mayor of The Hague since 2008. Prior to that, he was foreign affairs minister and an MP on behalf of the right-wing Liberal VVD.
