The site of former prison the Bijmerbajes in Amsterdam is on sale for €60 million, the government announced on Tuesday.

Buyers will be expected to build 1,000 homes on the 7.5 hectare plot and submit a plan to develop the new district planned in Overamstel. The nearby area, Amstelkwartier, has been earmarked for 5,000 new homes and other facilities and will be linked to the former prison grounds via a tunnel under the railway to Utrecht.

Potential developers have until December 8th to submit their plans to Amsterdam municipality and up to seven will be selected to develop their ideas further. Final blueprints will be due next June and the city hopes to select its buyer in September 2017.

The former prison was home, reports the Financiele Dagblad, to well-known convicts including Willem Holleeder and Klaas Bruinsma and the sale is part of a trend to raise capital from former state-owned land. Bijmerbajes area is currently being used as an asylum centre.
