Tuesday has become the warmest September 13 since records began, with the temperature topping 32 degrees in Maastricht, weather bureau Weerplaza said.

The previous record of 31.9 degrees was also recorded in Maastricht, but in 1947. In Limburg the temperature is expected to be around 30 degrees for the coming days and that could mean a new official heatwave, Weerplaza said.

However, the air quality is deteriorating and there is a risks that smog will develop, the public health institute RIVM said on Tuesday. It is advising people with breathing problems to stay indoors in the afternoon and early evening until Friday.

It may be 30 degrees outside, but at the Leisure World ice rink in Dronten in Flevoland work has started on getting ready for the coming skating season.

Staff are spraying the indoor rink with water everyday to build up a good layer of ice by Saturday, when the rink opens for business.
