Another chicken farm fire – this time 15,000 birds die
Some15,000 chickens have died in a fire at in a barn at a chicken farm in Drenthe. A second barn, which was empty, was also destroyed in the blaze.
The nearby farmhouse was unharmed but the fire did release some localised asbestos, fire officials said.
High tension electricity cables which crossed the farm came down in the fire and draped across the remains of the buildings, making it difficult to completely douse the flames. However, there has been no impact on local electricity supplies, network operator Tennet told news agency ANP.
The fire is the second to destroy a chicken farm this summer. Some 36,000 chickens died in a major blaze in Gelderland in June.
