Ajax hammered by FK Rostov and fail to make Champions League
A struggling Ajax lost 4-1 away to Russian side FK Rostov on Wednesday, ending their hopes of joining the Champions League group phase. The two sides had drawn 1-1 at the Arena last week.
Coach Peter Bosz said after the game: ‘This is not the Ajax that I want to see and not the Ajax of the home game. We played a hopeless game from the first minute… I got the feeling we were afraid. It was such a mess.’
The failure to qualify for the Champions League means Ajax will now be included in the draw for the Europa League group round instead.
The game was the last appearance for Ajax by keeper Jasper Cillessen, who said goodbye to fans on the pitch and to team mates in the changing the room. He then flew directly to Barcelona for medical checks and to finalise his move to Spain.
