Dutch Facebook pages are being sold for thousands of euros by internet ‘dealers’, reports NRC on Tuesday.

The paper claims that hobby-related pages on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with thousands of ‘likes’ are being bought for tens of euros but sold for a premium, so they can be used for advertising.

It interviewed five Facebook page traders and estimates that there are about 100 people actively selling pages, mostly young men.

It claims they approach page owners through private messages, then use websites such as sitedeals.nl to sell them to potential advertisers.

Managers of popular Dutch Facebook pages such as Taalvoutjes and Slechtegrap (about language mistakes and bad jokes) have, it claims, been asked if they are interested in ‘selling’ the pages.

The practice is against Facebook Ts and Cs, and a spokesperson told the NRC: ‘This is not allowed, and if we find out that it has happened, we delete the page.’
