Tennis player Kiki Bertens has broken into the world’s top 30 following her sensational run to the semi-finals of the French Open.

The 24-year-old from Wateringen upset the odds to become the first Dutch woman in 45 years to reach the last four at Roland Garros, where she faced world number one Serena Williams.

Despite struggling with a calf injury Bertens took the first set to a tie-break before eventually losing 7-6 6-4. Williams went on to lose the final to Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, who is now second in the ATP rankings behind Williams.

Just a month ago Bertens was ranked 89th in the world. She is due to play again on Wednesday in a grass court tournament in Rosmalen, but her injury has cast her participation into doubt.

Robin Haase remains the highest ranked Dutch male tennis player in 82nd place.
