Dutchman Michael van Gerwen thrashed Phil Taylor to win the Premier League darts title on Thursday night.

Van Gerwen, who is the world number one, booked an 11-3 victory over Taylor at the London final.

‘I’m so proud to have won this title again,’ Van Gerwen told Dutch media after the match. ‘This is perhaps the most important darts title after the World Cup.’

Van Gerwen, nicknamed Mighty Mike in the British press, won the title in 2013 but lost the final in the following two years. In 2014 he lost to fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld.

Darts is a popular sport in the Netherlands and Dutch players are among the best in the world. The national darts association NDB was founded in 1976 and has some 33,000 members.

The last round of the Premier League tournament, primarily a British event, took place in the Ahoy stadium in Rotterdam earlier this month in front of a packed house.
