One in four youngsters who leaves home returns to their parents house within five years, according to new figures from national statistics office CBS.

In the 1970s, just one in 10 youngsters boomeranged back home after a spell living on their own, the CBS said.

Girls on average leave home at a younger age than boys and are more likely than boys to go back. However, once back with their parents, boys tend to stay longer than girls.

‘A broken relationship is one of the most common reasons for going back, but a lack of money is also an issue,’ CBS spokesman Jan Latten said.

However, dropping out of college or university is now a far less common reason than it was five years ago, Latten said.
