Feyenoord clinch KNVB Cup in first big win since 2008; 59 arrests
Rotterdam football club Feyenoord on Sunday won the KNVB Cup for the first time since 2008 with a 2-1 win over FC Utrecht.
It was the 12th time the Rotterdammers have clinched the cup, which gives them a place in the group round of next year’s Europa League championship. Feyenoord are currently third in the Eredivisie.
Michiel Kramer put Feyenoord ahead and Ramon Leeuwin then equalised six minutes into the second half. The Rotterdammers clinched the game in the 75th minute when an Eljero Elia shot struck the post and rebounded off keeper Filip Bednarek into the net.
‘Winning a cup with Feyenoord was my biggest dream,’ Dirk Kuyt told Dutch broadcaster SBS6. ‘This could be my greatest prize ever.’ The former international returned to Feyenoord this season.
Police arrested 59 people before and after the game, which was considered a ‘risky’ match. In total, 700 police officers were drafted in.
However, post match celebrations in Rotterdam passed off relatively peacefully, police said.
