Students at Eindhoven University of Technology are launching what they say is the world’s first drone cafe on Friday, featuring drones that can take orders and serve them.

The drone café is an initiative by 20 students under the name of Blue Jay, and is part of the three-day Dream & Dare Festival marking the 60th anniversary of the university’s foundation. The café is open to the public each day from April 22 to 24.

The students say the aim is to demonstrate the potential of new drone applications.

‘The drones at the cafe can serve drinks independently but they can do a lot more than that,’ says Tessie Hartjes, student and team manager of the project. ‘For example, you could think of applications like fire prevention, tracking down burglars or delivering medicines.’
