a10 amsterdam road traffic jamPeople driving to and from The Hague are most likely to get caught up in traffic jams, according to research by satnav maker TomTom.

The Hague tops TomTom’s traffic index for the third year in a row. The research shows drivers in The Hague face an average 23% extra travelling time because of congestion. During evening rush hour this rises to 48%. Traffic congestion is worse on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Groningen is second on the TomTom list, with delays adding 22% to a free flow, or uncongested, journey. Amsterdam is in third place with 20%, followed by Rotterdam on 19%.

Drivers in Mexico City, by contrast, can expect to spend an average 59% extra travel time stuck in traffic anytime of the day, and up to 103% in the evening peak periods – adding up to 219 hours of extra travel time per year.

The TomTom Traffic Index measures congestion on the road networks of 295 cities around the world.
