A special hot line set up to help combat radicalisation among young Muslims received 552 requests for help and information in the first year of its operation, the organisers said on Tuesday.

The hot line was set up a year ago by the Dutch Moroccan association SMN with the aim of helping parents with concerns about their offspring.

In 94 cases, the threat of radicalisation was said to be so serious that a trained case worker was brought in to help the family. In 28% of cases the radical was a Dutch Muslim convert, and in 45% had Moroccan roots.

Most of the 94 serious cases involved youngsters aged 18 or older and just over half were men.
