50 dead cows found on farm in Gelderland
Government inspectors have found 50 dead cows and calves on a dairy farm in Gelderland. A further 89 animals were still alive and have been taken from the farm to be examined by vets.
The inspectors said in a statement that the farmer was no longer able to look after his animals and had only given them food and water sporadically. Manure had not been removed from the barn for some time.
It is not clear if the inspectors were called in or if they were on a routine visit.
The fire brigade was brought in to help clear away the dead animals.
The inspectors said it is crucial that everyone living or working on a farm is aware of animal welfare issues. ‘Farmers who neglect their animals do this because they see no way out,’ the statement said.
