Dutch set new One Hour skating records at over 40 kilometres
Dutch speed skaters have set two world distance records in the One Hour Race event at the Max Aicher Arena in Inzell, Germany.
The event challenges the athletes to skate as far as they can in one hour. In the women’s event Carien Kleibeuker set a new world record of by skating 40 kilometres and 612.39 metres within 60 minutes.
The 37-year-old smashed the previous record of just over 36 kilometres set by Maria Sterk in 2005.
In the men’s event, Erik Jan Kooman completed over 43 kilometres, comfortably beating Douwe de Vries’ record from earlier in the year. Kooiman’s father Jan held the title in 1983 and his mother was women’s title holder in 1982.
