Former PVV MEP faces jail over under-age girls
A former MEP for the anti-Islam PVV should be jailed for five months and given 240 hours community service for trying to seduce young teenagers, the public prosecution department said on Tuesday.
Daniƫl van der Stoep (35) is alleged to have tried to have sex with at least three girls and offered them money, gifts and cocaine between 2012 and 2014.
One of the girls, the daughter of a party worker, was 14 at the time, the court was told. Van der Stoep denies the charges. The girls considered him to be like an older brother or uncle, his laywer told the court earlier.
Police began investigating Van der Stoep after the father of one of the girls found online correspondence between the politician and his daughter.
Van der Stoep represented the PVV in the European parliament from 2009 but left the party in 2011 after he was arrested for causing a car accident while drunk. He stayed in Brussels as an independent but lost his seat in the July European elections.
