Dutch and Turkish football fans fight in Amsterdam
Fights broke out on Amsterdam’s Dam square on Thursday afternoon between supporters of Amsterdam football club Ajax and Turkish side Fenerbahçe.
Supporters threw chairs, tables, fireworks and glasses at each other and riot police were brought in to restore order, the Telegraaf reports.
Two people were arrested but police do not yet know which side they support, the paper said.
The atmosphere in Amsterdam has been tense all day ahead of this evening’s key Europa League duel, the Telegraaf reports. The police have also been given emergency stop and search powers in the area around the stadium in Amsterdam’s Zuidoost district.
Ajax have just two points from three matches and need to beat Fenerbahçe, who have four, to have a chance of progressing to the knock out rounds.
