The Netherlands invited to G20 trade summit in Istanbul

October 2, 2015

Lilianne PloumenThe Dutch government has been invited to send a representative to a summit of the world’s richest 20 nations for the first time since 2011.

Trade minister Lilianne Ploumen will be a guest at next week’s G20 summit of trade ministers in Istanbul at the invitation of Turkey.

The talks will include disappointing global economic growth and stimulating small firms to take a greater role in world trade, the foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.

The last time the Netherlands was present at a G20 meeting was an informal meeting on China in early 2011. The government was not invited to the big summit of government leaders in Cannes that same year.

At the time, insiders said the Netherlands may have been snubbed because of its decision to pull out of Nato efforts in Afghanistan.
