Both Ajax and AZ of Alkmaar failed to score in Thursday night’s Europa League ties, but FC Groningen did manage to snatch a point in the dying seconds of their game.
The equalizer against Slovan Liberic headed off a third defeat in three matches for Groningen, which now has one point from the 1-1 draw.
Ajax are now third in Group A after losing 1-0 away to Fenerbahçe, who managed to score in the 90th minute of the game. ‘It is very bitter. We earned a draw,’ coach Frank de Boer said after the match.
Next on the Ajax agenda is a home game against the Turkish side on November 5. The final two games of the series are Celtic away on November 26 and Molde at home on December 10.
In Alkmaar, Augsburg snatched a 1-0 win from AZ in what is their first-ever victory in European competition. The decisive goal was scored two minutes before half-time. Both teams are joint bottom of Group L with three points from three matches.
