Sprinter Dafne Schippers to take up long jump ‘for fun’

dafne schippersDutch world champion sprinter Dafne Schippers is to concentrate on the long jump as well as running in the coming athletics season, she told a news conference on Thursday.

Schippers took the gold medal in the 200 metres in Beijing last month and silver in the 100 metres.

However, the decision to spend time on the long jump does not mean she has Olympic hopes in the sport and will focus in Rio on the sprints and the 4×100 metre relay, Schippers said. Long jumping is ‘just for fun’, she added.

Schippers was a heptathlete before deciding to focus on sprinting earlier this year, partly because of knee problems. She is currently Dutch long jump record holder with a distance of 6.78 metres. The current world record of 7.52 metres dates from 1988.

‘I had trouble with my knee from the high jump and that won’t be the case with the long jump,’ she told reporters.
