Nearly one in three of the Dutch want borders shut to all immigrants: Nos survey
The Netherlands should shut its borders to all immigrants, not just asylum seekers, say almost one in three of the Dutch, according to a survey for broadcaster Nos.
In total, 28% of those polled agreed with the statement that the cabinet should close the borders to all forms of migration, including people from other European countries. Just over half (52%) said the borders should not be closed.
The Netherlands on Monday announced plans to increase spot checks on its borders with Germany and Belgium, as Europe grapples with a surge in refugees from Iraq and Syria.
The Nos survey showed that 78% of people who support the anti-immigration PVV believe the borders should be shut, as do 31% of Socialist Party supporters. Support among VVD backers was 28%, in line with the national average.
Asked about the likely impact of refugees on the Netherlands, 47% said they expected a negative influence and 43% said they expected the country to become less safe.
The survey also asked about Europe’s role. Around half of those polled think it is a good idea to spread the refugees round the EU.
Just one in five said the Netherlands should not take any extra refugees under the redistribution plan and half think fewer than 6,000 would be an acceptable number.
