SAIL attracts 2.3 million visitors to Amsterdam
The SAIL maritime event ended on Sunday with the departure of the tall ships, having attracted 2.3 million visitors across its four days.
Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan said it was a ‘fantastic SAIL but with a sad note’, Dutch media report.
On Friday, a 23-year-old man fell into the water and despite the best efforts of fire service personnel to reanimate him, died in hospital on Saturday.
Record
The number of visitors was a record. The previous sail in 2010 attracted 1.7 million people.
Visitor numbers grew over the four days of the event. On Wednesday, when the tall ships arrived in Amsterdam, there were 350,000 people on the quays and in boats. By Saturday, numbers had increased to 600,000.
The next edition of SAIL is in 2020.
