The golden coach used each year on budget day is to be refurbished and will disappear from view for several years.
The 19th century coach is used each year in September on Prinsjesdag when the monarch travels to parliament to deliver the traditional speech outlining the government’s plans for the coming year.
The state information service RVD says the coach is in need of major restoration work which will begin after this year’s Prinsjesdag on September 15.
The work will take between three and four years and the cost will be covered by the general budget of the Service department of the monarchy, the RVD says.
During the restoration, the newly restored glass coach will be used on Prinsjesdag.
The golden coach was given to queen Wilhelmina by the people of Amsterdam on the occasion of her inauguration in 1898.
