Ajax’ dream of joining this season’s Champions League competition were left in tatters on Tuesday night after the Amsterdam club lost 2-3 to Rapid Vienna in the second leg of their qualifying tie.
Ajax were down 0-2 at the end of the first half and managed to claw back to 2-2 before being sunk by the winner with 13 minutes left to play. The first leg, in Vienna, ended in a 2-2 draw.
Ajax will now be included in the draw for the final qualifying round of the Europa League, which takes place in Nyon in Switzerland on Friday.
PSV Eindhoven, as last season’s Eredivise champion, will take part in the prestige event.
It is the first time since 2010 that Ajax has failed to qualify for the Champions League.
