Van Basten tipped as assistant for Dutch national football team
Marco van Basten will be appointed as assistant to Danny Blind, the new coach of the Dutch national football team, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.
According to the paper, the Dutch football association KNVB and Van Basten’s current employer, Alkmaar club AZ, have reached agreement on a fee to cover the rest of Van Basten’s contract, which has a further year to run.
Van Basten was head coach at the premier division club but stepped back last year to become assistant trainer. The 50-year-old, who is regarded as one of the greatest strikers of all time, has also coached Ajax and the national Dutch team.
He will become the second assistant to Blind, who was announced as the new national coach four days ago. Ruud van Nistelrooy is the other assistant.
