Aerial view of Dutch train at a bridge crossing a canalThe redevelopment of Utrecht’s central station and railway network could be €100m over budget and will take almost a year longer than planned, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Thursday.

The paper bases its claims on a confidential infrastructure ministry report. The project, which began in 2012 and is due to be completed at the beginning of 2016, has a budget of €270m.

The paper says the ministry instigated an investigation into the overspend in April and is focusing on track operator ProRail, which is responsible for the project.

ProRail and the ministry have been faced with considerable overspends on other project, the paper points out.

The renewal of the railway between Lelystad and the Randstad central urban belt overran its budget by €260m while an overhaul of the railway around Zwolle cost €200m more than it should have.

A spokesman for ProRail told news agency ANP the overspend on the Utrecht project would be limited to €30m.
