Number of asylum seekers grows again

no border network refugeesThe number of asylum seekers applying to stay in the Netherlands rose by one-third to 2,937 in June, the justice ministry said on Thursday.

Most of them came from Eritrea (1,248) and Syria (737).

The number of lone children also rose, to 299 in June.

Between March and May the number of asylum seekers rose from 800 to 2,300.

On Wednesday it was announced that two congress centres are being converted into emergency accommodation for the growing stream of asylum seekers entering the Netherlands.

Each will take around 400 migrants on a short-term basis to cope with the ‘an unusual peak in the number of people seeking asylum’, the Dutch refugee agency COA said.
