Charity donations stagnate despite improved economy

July 10, 2015

euro money banknotesCharity donations stagnated last year despite the improvement in the Dutch economy, according to the Volkskrant’s latest survey of the biggest 25 charities.

Joint income among the 25 was €760m, up just 0.1% on 2013.

Donations to cancer charity KWF fell €12m to €124m, mainly because of the row around the Alpe d’HuZes cycling race. The founder of the race was found to have spent €160,000 on organisational expenses despite an agreement that all the money raised would go to cancer charities.

In comparison, the Dutch branch of Doctors without Borders had a good year, mainly through the publicity surrounding major disasters, such as the ebola outbreak.

The charity improved its donations from €24m in 2004 to €52m in 2014.
