Police speed traps are causing traffic jams

Motorway jams in AmsterdamPolice radar checks for speeding drivers are actually causing traffic jams, the traffic information service VID said on Monday.

Because the checks are usually fairly obvious, drivers slow down on approach which causes traffic to back up, the VID said.

‘Since November last year, at least 15 long jams have been caused by police speed traps and that is only the really obvious ones,’ the organisation is quoted as saying by broadcaster Nos.

In particular, the A6 near Almere is a hot spot, the organisation said. ‘The new checkpoint has caused at least three jams of eight kilometres in the past few weeks,’ the organisation said.

The police said in a reaction that their policy is to stop checking for speeding motorists if jams begin to develop.

In addition, if drivers did not break the speed limit, there would be no need for them to slow down when they spot a checkpoint.
