Dutch take home 29 medals from first European Olympics

June 28, 2015

Grol of the Netherlands celebrates after winnign his men's judo under 100kg gold medal fight at the 1st European Games in Baku, AzerbaijanThe Netherlands picked up 29 medals at the first ever European Olympics which finished in Baku on Sunday.

The final tally was eight gold, 12 silver and nine bronze awards, placing the Netherlands ninth in the medals table.

Two of the gold medals were picked up by judokas Henk Grol and Marhinde Verkerk on Saturday. The other golds went to swimmer Marrit Steenbergen, table tennis player Li Jiao, gymnast Lieke Wevers, boxer Nouchka Fontijn, cyclist Ellen van Dijk and judoka Kim Polling.

The final tally is far above the target set by mission chief Jeroen Bijl who aimed for eight medals in five different sports.

The Netherlands was going to host the second edition of the European Olympics in 2019 but was forced to hand back the contract because of a lack of funding.
