Broadcasting chief apologises for racist edit in hidden camera show
The director of Christian broadcasting station EO has apologised to a woman after a programme she appeared in was edited to show her agreeing with a racist clothes shop assistant.
The programme – Hufterproef (idiot test) – uses hidden cameras to track people’s reactions to anti-social behaviour.
The June 5 episode featured a shop assistant asking a customer in a headscarf if ‘little Mustapha has managed to make a choice’ and shows another customer, Sylvia Voogel, agreeing with his remarks.
However, the raw footage shows Voogel actually defending the girl in the headscarf – played by an actress – against the shop assistant, who was also an actor. She only agreed with the assistant that more needed to be done to stop shoplifting.
Vogel says she has been attacked and threatened on social media since the broadcast and now does not dare to leave her home.
‘It is so unfair. I am not a racist,’ Voogel told RTL news. ‘My life has been turned upside down by this.’ She is now considering legal action against the broadcaster.
EO director Arjan Lock told Radio 1 news that the production company, Skyhigh TV, had made a very serious error and that the company should apologise to Voogel.
However, the EO is not planning any sanctions and the relationship between the EO and Skyhigh TV is not under pressure, he said.
