New auction record set for work by Mondriaan: $50.56m
A new record for a work of art by Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan was set by Christie’s auction house in New York on Thursday.
The 1929 work – Composition No III with Red, Blue, Yellow and Black – was sold for $50.56m (€44.4m), double the auction estimates.
The previous record for a Mondriaan, who is known as Mondrian outside the Netherlands, was $27.59m for Composition with Red, Blue and Grey, which was bought in 2014.
