Eredivisie round up: AZ claim third place at the expense of Feyenoord
Feyenoord fall at PEC Zwolle and AZ Alkmaar claim third place in the Eredivisie, in the final round of the season. The loss has cost Feyenoord both their manager and direct qualification for next season’s Europa League, reports Neil Adderley.
PEC Zwolle 3 – 0 Feyenoord: Feyenoord part company with manager as Europa play-offs loom
Feyenoord failed to claim the win to guarantee Europa League qualification. The visitors fate was in their own hands but a heavy defeat at PEC consigns the Rotterdam side to the end of season play-offs.
Second half goals from Ben Rienstra, and a Tomas Necid double gave PEC a deserved victory and saw Feyenoord pipped to third place by AZ Alkmaar.
The defeat has cost Fred Rutten his job with former Feyenoord and Dutch captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking charge with immediate effect.
Excelsior 1 – 4 AZ Alkmaar: AZ pip Feyenoord to take Europa League qualification
AZ got off to a perfect start with two goals in the first six minutes. A fourth minute Aron Jóhannsson overhead kick was quickly followed two minutes later by a smart Steven Berghuis finish.
The visitors, who were aiming to reel in Feyenoord but were dependent on the result between PEC and the Rotterdammers, went three ahead before the break through Markus Henriksen.
Excelsior were thrown a lifeline on the stroke of halftime with a Jeffrey Gouweleeuw own goal, however, AZ quickly regained a three goal advantage as Aron Jóhannsson headed home his second and AZ’s fourth.
The away supporters celebrated as the news broke of PEC Zwolle being three ahead against Feyenoord, confirming AZ had claimed a third place finish and direct qualification into next seasons Europa League.
ADO Den Haag 2 – 3 PSV Eindhoven: Champions sign off with final day win
The newly crowned Eredivisie champions eventually showed the quality to see off a game ADO Den Haag.
The hosts started the game aggressively and claimed a deserved lead on 24 minutes as Aleksandr Iakovenko beat PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet with a low drive.
Manchester bound Memphis Depay missed a chance to bring the sides level but his teammate Luciano Narsingh made no mistake to square proceedings just before the break.
ADO pressed again in the second half and deservedly regained the lead as Danny Bakker found the top corner from inside the penalty area.
The champions would not be denied and goals from Luuk de Jong and a last minute winner from Georginio Wijnaldum sealed the victory for PSV.
Cambuur Leeuwarden 1 – 2 Willem II: Excellent return to Eredivisie ends in victory for Willem II
Victory at Cambuur secured a top ten finish for the Tilburg side who were widely tipped to struggle on their return to the Eredivisie.
Goals either side of halftime from Ben Sahar and Samuel Armenteros were enough for the visitors to claim all three points.
While Erik Bakker pulled one back from the spot on 85 minutes, the hosts failed to find an equaliser.
FC Dordrecht 2 – 1 Ajax: Relegated Dordrecht embarrass Ajax
A disappointing season for Ajax ended with a whimper as relegated Dordrecht claimed a famous victory over the Amsterdam giants.
A tepid affair finally sprung to life in the second period when Viktor Fischer tapped into an empty net after good work from Lasse Schone.
However, a Sean Klaiber equaliser was followed by an injury-time winner from Ricky van Haaren to give second division bound Dordrecht a deserved win.
Heerenveen 1 – 3 FC Twente: Ziyech masterclass gives Twente much needed cheer
Despite falling behind after only 25 seconds, FC Twente, led by the outstanding Hakim Ziyech, bounced back to claim all three points at the Abe Lenstra stadion.
The ex-Heerenveen midfielder finished from close range after good work from striker Luc Castaignos, before firing a powerful strike past keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt from 25-yards to make it 2-1.
Ziyech then turned provider as Orlando Engelaar headed home the midfielders corner on 72 minutes.
Heracles Almelo 1 – 0 Go Ahead Eagles: Linssen strike enough for Heracles
The visitors failed to make a dominant opening pay and were left kicking themselves as the impressive Bryan Linssen scored the only goal of the game on 49 minutes.
Go Ahead now face a play-off fight for Eredivisie survival while Heracles, after a woeful start to the campaign, finish the season in fourteenth place.
NAC Breda 4 – 5 Groningen: Cup winners Groningen win nine goal thriller
An historic season for Groningen ended with the ‘Pride of the North’ claiming three points after a nine goal thriller in Breda.
Groningen’s top scorer Michael de Leeuw fired a first half hat trick, only for Guyon Fernandez and Adnane Tighadouini to reply for NAC.
A trademark Tjaronn Chery free-kick restored Groningen’s two goal lead, but NAC refused to lie down and quickly levelled the scores at 4-4 with further goals from Tighadouini and Fernandez.
However, with just four minutes left on the clock, Danny Hoesen fired a shot into the top corner to make it 4-5 and seal the three points for Groningen.
Vitesse Arnhem 3 – 3 FC Utrecht: Point for Vitesse not enough to avoid play-offs
Vitesse were hoping for a minor miracle on the last day but knew only a win at home to Utrecht would be enough to avoid the Europa League play-offs.
The hosts got off to a quick-fire start as Bertrand Traore’s deflected shot beat Utrecht keeper Robbin Ruiter on 12 minutes.
The Chelsea loanee then doubled Vitesse’s lead but Utrecht hit back with two goals in as many minutes from Yassin Ayoub and Bart Ramselaar.
Danny Verbeek then put Utrecht in front from a free kick but Zakaria Labyad’s injury leveller denied the visitors a shock victory.
Vitesse finish the season in fifth place and now face PEC Zwolle in the Europa League play-offs. Utrecht end the season in 11th.
