Dutch ‘digital drugs lord’ jailed for 10 years in the US

May 29, 2015

Pill DisplayA 23-year-old Dutch national has been jailed for 10 years by a court in the US for selling large amounts of drugs via ‘secret’ website Silk Road.

Maikel Slomp, described as a ‘digital drugs lord’, was arrested in Miami in 2013 and is said to have earned millions in bitcoins selling ecstasy, lsd, cocaine and marijuana online.

Last year, he agreed a deal with the US authorities which will allow him to serve at least part of his sentence in a Dutch jail.

According to the Chicago Sun Times newspaper, Slomp told the court he was ‘ashamed and embarrassed’ and that he justified his activity by telling himself others made their own decision to use drugs.

The court was told Slomp shipped 14 kilos of MDMA, 566,000 ecstasy pills and four kilos of cocaine and other drugs through the mail, using the online moniker ‘SuperTrips’.

Silk Road was shut down in October 2013.
