Police registered 8% fewer crimes last year
Dutch police registered just over one million crimes last year, a drop of 8% on 2013, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.
The number of recorded crimes has been falling steadily for years. Ten years ago, the police registered 1,348,300 crimes but last year the total fell to 1,000,600, the CBS figures show.
In particular, the number of high impact crimes such as burglary, muggings, armed robbery and physical assault, was down 12%, the CBS said.
The biggest drop – 23% – was in reports about armed robberies and muggings. The number of burglaries in private homes was also down by 19% at 71,000.
The figures show around one in four crimes was solved within a year, a three percentage point increase on 2013. This is due to the fall-off in reports about crimes which are notoriously difficult to solve, such as pickpocketing and burglary, the CBS said.
