Geert Wilders’ PVV sees potential in Rotterdam local politics

Rotterdam skylineGeert Wilders’ anti-Islamic party PVV will challenge populist Leefbaar Rotterdam in the next local elections in Rotterdam, Wilders told the AD at the weekend.

‘We will draw up our own list of candidates and we want to run the city,’ Wilders said. The next local elections are in 2018.

The PVV emerged as the biggest party in Rotterdam in the recent provincial council vote. Leefbaar Rotterdam, founded by the murdered Pim Fortuyn, is the biggest party on the port city’s council.

The two parties had gentlemen’s agreement not to stand in each other’s patch. The PVV only took part in the local elections in The Hague and Almere last year and lost support in both cities.
