Police received reports of almost 71,000 burglaries and attempted burglaries at private homes last year, a drop of 16,000 on 2013, justice minister Ivo Opstelten said on Monday.
There were also fewer muggings and armed robberies, down 400 to 1,267 and down 1,500 to 5,500, the minister said.
These ‘fantastic results’ are due to the way everyone within the security chain had worked together, Opstelten is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
Figures released on Monday by the national statistics office CBS also show that people in the Netherlands are less likely to feel unsafe than they did 10 years ago
Common crimes such as vandalism, theft and assault have dropped by over 30% since 2005 and just 19% of people were the victim of such a crime last year. In 2005, almost 50% of the population said they felt unsafe at times, but that fell to 36% in 2014.
People aged 18 to 34 are most likely to feel unsafe and they are most likely to be the victims of crime, the CBS said.
