Dutch suicide bomber was public speaker

February 5, 2015

The Dutch jihadist who died in a suicide bombing in the Iraqi town of Fallujah on Wednesday has been identified by broadcasters Nos and RTV Noord-Holland as Lotfi S.

The 32-year-old, also known as Abu Hanief, was one of two speakers during the Isis demonstrations in the Schilderswijk in The Hague last July, when anti-semitic slogans were shouted and black jihadi flags were waved.

S, who came from Amsterdam, was a prominent member of the associated groups Street Dawah and Behind Bars, one of the most successful jihadi activist groups in the Netherlands, according to the security service AIVD. He took part in several demonstrations, including that of September 2012 on the Museumplein in Amsterdam against the film Innocence of Muslims.

It was the first time the jihadi movement in the Netherlands became visible, with radical muslims shouting the name of Osama bin Laden and waving the Isis flag.

S was arrested following the Schilderswijk demonstrations but was later freed.

He is thought to be the fourth Dutch jihadist to carry out a suicide bombing in Iraq or Syria.
