he Dutch football association KNVB will hear on February 28 if it has been given the green light by Fifa to start testing video referee systems, broadcaster Nos says on Wednesday.
The KNVB is keen to begin using video referees and wanted to start testing in August 2014 during cup and reserve team matches.
Video referees are already used in hockey, tennis and American football and allow teams to have controversial refereeing decisions checked against camera footage from various angles.
The KNVB has been running preliminary assessments of how useful video referees are since the 2013/14 season. ‘The first season of the pilot showed that the video referee is of value in three to four important decisions per match,’ the KNVB concluded at the time.
A video check after the match led referee Kevin Blom to tear up the red card he gave Jetro Willems in the first 29 seconds of PSV’s clash with NAC Breda this weekend.
It was the fastest ever red card in Eredivise history.
