Dutch clubs in Europe: one win, one draw, one defeat
There were mixed fortunes for the three Dutch football clubs left in the Europa League competition on Thursday night.
Amsterdam’s Ajax managed a 1-0 home win against Legia Warsaw. The crucial goal was scored by Poland’s Arkadiusz Milik in the first half and ‘a fine display by goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen ensured a slender advantage for the Dutch hosts’, website Uefa.com reported.
In Italy, Feyenoord’s match against AS Roma was marred by crowd trouble and arrests before the game. Gervinho gave the home side the lead before being made to pay for a pair of missed chances when Colin Kazım Richards equalised to make the final score 1-1.
In Eindhoven, however, Dutch league leaders PSV were unable to hold off St Petersburg side FC Zenit, who return to Russia with a 1-0 away victory.
The second legs are next Thursday and the draw for the round of 16 takes place the following day.
